You’ve Got The Internship… What Now?

You’ve wowed them with your interviewing skills and your impressive resume… you’ve got the job. What now?

What do you do to ensure you’re getting the most out of the experience? Well, I’ve spoken to professionals and past interns of many different fields and here’s what they had to say…

Be passionate and love what you do. The professionals in your field are seasoned and have seen many come through that aren’t truly passionate about what they do. It WILL show through your work whether or not you believe in what you’re doing. Opportunities like the ones you’re looking for, require your passion to be there. You may not end up getting the best review at the end of it.

You may think you know it all… you really don’t. I got a taste of this firsthand when I was applying for some internships. I thought being confident was a good thing.. but that backfired. Be humble when speaking about your own experiences and skills. Internships are designed to help you learn and become a better future professional. Take advantage of those experiences you get because it’s not every day you can surround yourself with seasoned professionals. The interns that get the most out of their experience are those not trying to be interesting… it’s the ones that are interested.

The idea of being interesting goes with your networking skills. You never may know who may be watching you mingle with other professionals. Practice being interested and learning from those around you. Having great people skills is key to learning.

Lastly for today… a great intern knows how to write. I know you may feel like you’re not the best writer but the main thing is to write so you can get better. The initial start of writing is the hardest part… as it was for me. WordPress and Blogger have some great blogging formats which also allow for great showcasing of your creative abilities of which I still need to work on. Ask for feedback on your writing from the professionals around you. Use those professionals to edit and critique your writing. It’s the only way you’ll get better.

Like what you’ve read? What would you like to see? I’m trying to better my writing and the only way I can do that is if I get feedback from my readers. Let me know what you’d like to see or if you’ve got any tips for writing.
